At a young age Martin knew he wanted to be in the radio industry. Listening to the radio nonstop for hours on end would make his passion grow immensely. Carrying a recorder and making fake radio shows was a daily routine for him. It was one day that his cousin Ruby told him to call in and become a “High School guest DJ for an hour” on the world famous radio station known as Power 106 in Los Angeles that really sparked off his passion. He was bit by the radio bug and it would not stop from there on out.
Taking some courses at the Academy of Radio Broadcasting in Orange County really helped him understand how a radio station works. He learned the basic tools that would help him land an internship at Country Station 93.9 KZLA in the promotions department. Working hard and always being there when they needed him, he was offered a street team position and held if for over a year when the Event Coordinator at Power 106 noticed him and offered him a job on the “Flava Unit.” Accepting the job, he would rock the mic at different concerts, events, and hosted countless movie screenings and gigs. This brought him to meet Eric D-Lux and Big Syphe, he was offered an internship on their show that was heard daily from 3-7p. There he worked with Tito, a famous janitor made on air DJ, he would write “Tito’s top 4@4” and become a voice on their show known as “Phunky Fat,” making parodies about food, and crack jokes.
Things were going good, until they became better. He was offered a Promotions Coordinator position at MOVIN 93.9 “Home of Rick Dees” it was there that he met Clarence Barnes and really started to record demos and letting anyone who would take the time to hear them, hear them. It wasn’t until MOVIN 93.9 flipped formats, and he was let go. Landing a job at Exitos 93.9 as the Promotions Manager was his next step. He would learn more about the Promotions Department and how to run a Promotions team. He got his knowledge and parted ways.
That didn’t stop him from pursuing his dream, he was offered a job at 97.1 AMP RADIO as a phone screener. There he would work closely with the on air staff and learn so much from them. Tips that would help him down the line. Quickly he became known as “Martin on the Scene” with the night time DJ McCabe. He would go out on the streets and make the party happen! He would engage with the listener and put them on air during McCabe’s show.
Sending out countless demos to different markets, one finally reached back. He would then pack his bags within a two week notice and head to Sin City, Las Vegas was his next home. He was offered an on air position at the 98.5 KLUC “Las Vegas’s #1 Hit Music Station” and was on air in a city that never slept. He was on air for months until he came back home to Orange County and decided he wanted to do radio in his home state.
It wasn’t until the program director at U92.7 reached out to him and offered him an on air position with “The Deserts Hottest Music U92.7”. You can now hear him during the weekends and filling in for one of the most amazing on air staff to hit the Coachella Valley!
